For DNA, at least, I can tell you that most people don't know that the A stands for "acid" (because, after all, the molecule is well-known for encoding genetic code, but not for chemically having a pH below 7). And of course, those who do know what it stands for know enough not to redundantly say "acid".

As for AIDS, when the disease first started spreading in this country, there were all sorts of public announcements and articles about it, and they all simply called it "AIDS". "How to avoid getting AIDS." "Stop the spread of AIDS". "AIDS: The Terrible Killer."

"IUD" is well-known because it's a military term. We've all read news items about some soldier being killed by an IUD, soldiers talking about the constant threat of IUDs, etc.

I guess it's mainly determined by how people know about these things: PIN (number)s and ATM (machine)s are things that regular people use every day. DNA, AIDS and IUDs are things that people hear about through the news.

Ok, there's being right. And then there's more important things than being right, like not being a jerk and correcting people all the time.

But even more important than that is the Rule of Funny.

Imagining soldiers being blown up by an IUD is pretty darn funny.

(Perhaps you meant IED...)

D'oh! Yeah I meant IED.

But, I hope you don't think I was being a jerk or correcting toonygal or anything. I was just explaining stuff, theorizing, giving my take on it. I mean, this whole post is about how I don't mind at all if people say "PIN number".
