LJ, please stop doing whatever the hell you're doing that makes some of my friends hate you and run away to dreamwidth.org for reasons I can't figure out because I fall asleep trying to read about them. I don't need to add yet another website to my massive daily browsing pile.

Thanks, buddy. Anything I can incompletely understand and then trivialise for you in return?

I've been working on leaving LiveJournal for a long period due to their multiple violations of trust, slow ablation of scruples, and just plain lousy moves in the last few years. It's not some infantile tantrum, but a decision I'd been thinking hard about until the final over-the-line push. I can't speak to everyone else's reasons, but it'd be great to see a little less blanket dismissal, eh?

Now now, you two.

I'd like to emphasize that I'm not criticizing people for moving away from LJ. I'm criticizing LJ for pulling shenanigans that drive people away. And... I wrote this post as a frustrated rant because I was in a bad mood.

I have no plans to move away myself, since I bought a permanent account several years ago and it's paid for itself about twice by now. So I personally don't really care what LJ does, except I don't want it driving half my friends list away.

To be honest, this post was a gut reaction to something that happened recently where someone else on my friends list had started posting to Dreamwidth, but had set it up to automatically crosspost here. I read one of his recent posts, and I wanted to post a clever little comment to it with one of my icons (the "medicine" one I made this post with).

Thing was, he had it set with LJ comments turned off, forcing me to go to Dreamwidth to post a comment. I tried to use OpenID, but it made me jump through a bunch of hoops to sign up (and pissed me off at one point by taking forever to send me a confirmation email), and then after I did, I discovered it wouldn't let me use any of my LJ icons unless I uploaded them over there, and at that point it just wasn't worth the effort anymore and I gave up.

It seems to me that most people I know of are leaving for Twitter instead. I'm not sure how much "I'm eating [meal] / I'm going to bed." I can stand.

I used to believe that Twitter was designed for the convenience of the reader at a cost to the writer, given the character count limitation. But when I consider how many tweets are of interest only to the writer, I'm not so sure.

Yeah, I actually have nothing against Twitter. Given that it allows celebrities like Stephen Fry and Weird Al to talk directly to their fans, I think it's pretty damn cool! (I don't have a Twitter account myself, but, who knows, I might get one in the future.)

Is it true that new users can no longer have an ad-free "basic" account? Practically everybody I know joined long before then, so that might be why I've never had issues with ads.

Even us old users can't have an ad-free basic account any more. I got a paid account before they changed this policy so it hasn't affected me as much, but if I hadn't, I'd have been even more angered than I was.

I haven't noticed the dreamwidth drift. Facebook, though, is another story.

They went to Dreamwidth.com because they liked how Livejournal used to be a gated community that you needed permission to get into.
