Happy Easter, everyone!

XTC reminds us all of Easter's origins as a pagan springtime fertility celebration:

Actually Easter has become a merger of the Christian holy day and the pagan spring celebration. The bunnies, eggs, and fertility stuff came from the pagans, the religious overtones came from the Christians. Early Christian missionaries in Europe decided to incorporate the pagan ceremonies into their missionary work to increase the rate of acceptance among the locals.

That's the most cacophonous song I've heard in a while.

That's on purpose. The dissonant chords during the verses suggest earthiness; things growing out of the previously barren winter dirt, animals rutting in the grass... until they resolve, on the line "Enter Easter and she's dressed in yellow yolk", into airy harmony suggesting the beautiful world of plants in bloom.
