Eight planets + five dwarf planets = PARTYYYY - The online computery journal thingy of a turtle

08:16 pm - Eight planets + five dwarf planets = PARTYYYY

Previous Entry Share Next Entry

Some time ago, Pluto was demoted from "planet" to "dwarf planet". But that doesn't mean we have to kick it out of the planet party! Why not just make it a "planet/dwarf planet" party and invite the other dwarf planets in for more fun? Instead of shrinking, the list now grows, thus:

Mercury
Venus
Earth
Mars
Ceres
Jupiter
Saturn
Uranus
Neptune
Pluto
Haumea
Makemake
Eris

It needs a new mnemonic now, of course. How about this:

"My very earnest mother can jump straight up now; phone home, mother, earnestly!"

But how about Charon? It's smaller than Pluto but they're both orbiting each other. (It was going to be a planet in the original "12 planet" definition but kind of got dropped once the dwarves were demoted.) Pluto and Charon aren't in any particular order, though, so how about this? "My very earnest mother can jump straight up now; phone/call home, Mother, earnestly!"

That's a rather handsome set of planetary symbols. Where'd you find them? (Did you make them?)

Thank you! I made some of them - Ceres is official, and this icon uses the astrological Pluto rather than the astronomical (because it's pretty). Charon is from http://suberic.net/~dmm/astro/moons.html and Haumea, Makemake, and Eris are from http://suberic.net/~dmm/astro/tno.html .

You know, by that logic, we need to include Luna, too.

No, it doesn't apply. The center point of the Terra-Luna system is within the planet, and only Luna is tidally locked. The Charon-Pluto barycenter is between the two bodies and they're both tidally locked to each other (so you could build a 12,000 mile long bridge between them if you wanted).

I'll buy that; I'd forgotten about the Terra-Luna barycenter (not to be confused with the Terraluna Batty Center).

We could almost consider Charon-Pluto a single body that just happens to be in two chunks (especially astrologically).

This is the sort of thing which causes hypothetical future humans to say "Because we can!" and spend astronomical amounts of money for no good reason. I heartily approve.

Speaking of which... I'm going to see Jonathan Coulton in concert in Austin on Friday. I hope he sings "I'm Your Moon"!

This is the list I'm using for Thirteen Ribbons – it's why there are, well, thirteen ribbons!

And yeah, Pluto is technically a binary planet with Charon, but there's no official designation for binary dwarf planets yet....

They're just the planetary kinksters in this neighborhood, one must suppose.

A little awkward but I think it works. Refinements?

What about Sedna? Or is it still on probation?

It's too far out to easily confirm that's it's spherical, so it's stuck on the "dwarf planet candidate" list.

And 8 to 5 male/female ratio too. Party indeed.
