While driving home today, I spotted a car with lettering in the windshield that spelled "PICASSO" in all caps in Old English script. I know that makes some people cringe, because you're not supposed to use that font in all caps. There's supposed to be one capital letter at the beginning, acting as a decorative lead-in to the rest of the word.

And I thought of an analogy: setting all-caps text in Old English font is like singing a song and inserting a flourish intro before every single word. Like instead of singing:

o/` Dada dada da da, hey! Mary had a little lamb, little lamb, little lamb... o/`

...you're singing:

o/` Dada dada da da, hey! Mary...
Dada dada da da, hey! Had...
Dada dada da da, hey! A...
Dada dada da da, hey! Little...
Dada dada da da, hey! Lamb... o/`

The over-flourishing on your example puts me in mind of a Broadway musical.

Hammers & Rodgerstein's "Mary Had a Little Lamb", starring Mary Marin and Marty Martin, premiered sort of offish-Broadway and ran for 172 nights, and had two #1 hits with the show-stopping number "Dada Dada Da Da, Hey (Mary Had a Little Lamb)" and the tender ballad "I've Never Had a Little Lamb (Like This Before)".

Homer Simpson: So I want the monogram to read "M-A-X P-O-W ... "
Employee: Sir, traditionally, a monogram is just initials.
Homer: Max Power doesn't abbreviate. Each letter is as important as the one that preceded it. Maybe more important! No, as important.
Employee: [sighing] Very well.
Homer: And if you've got enough room, add some exclamation points and a pirate flag.

It's not quite the same, since the flourishes make the song much slower and longer. I'm thinking more of Chris Burman's "He! Could! Go! All! The! Way!" (I prefer that to "This! Is! Sparta!")

I hate Old English font. They put it in hymnals and it renders everything unreadable. I was in college before I understood that one Latin word meant "the great thanksgiving" and not...BEAHUMFRUMPHAFRUMM MISCONCORDIANAM
