06:29 pm - Con diaries and the possible future thereof

Previous Entry Share Next Entry

I may or may not continue drawing con diaries. I haven't decided yet what I'm going to do. But I started doing it for fun, and well, it's been less fun lately. I think part of that is that my eyes are getting old, and it's getting hard to concentrate on the page long enough to get sufficient work done without getting all tired and haggard later in the evening.

Another issue is, I've got other projects I want to do, and would like to start someday soon. Maybe do Flash animation, maybe something music-related. I haven't actually touched my Legos in a few years...

I'm still trying to figure out what I want to do. I may stop altogether, I may cut down and draw maybe a one-panel or three-panel cartoon about each trip I go on...

Current Mood: contemplativecontemplative
Current Music: Talking Heads - Sax and Violins

Aging sucks. :(

Con diaries are really the sort of thing that you should only do if you enjoy, though. It's a hobby, and even though there are many people (including myself) who love reading them, if you're not having fun, the entire point is lost.

Maybe you can shift from a diary to a "Memorable moments" format. Just draw a few strips for each event, documenting your favorite moments from the con. Rather than tell a complete story, just give the highlights.

Could you at least give the con diaries a send off when you attend S!3? (since they started out documenting your A! get togethers and personal trips, that'd be a fitting end to them...)

[as a sidebar, yes, I am greedy to have more pictures drawn of me... ]:oP ]

I'm thinking of documenting S!3 with one big picture a day, showing all of us doing the main thing we did that day.

Hi KT,

Hi, It's Rob. I'm a fan of your site. Someday, I'll stop being lazy + get a livejournal account, so I don't have to be mr. anonymous all the time. Ha!

Well, Heck. I've always loved your trip diaries. I'll miss them if they come to end. But I'm sure that your Legos miss you. Ha.

You have a great + wonderful illustration style and writing style in your trip diaries.

I like the suggestion of your doing the favorite moments of your trips as a T. diary as smaller trip diaries. Or, you could do the writing of your trip diaries + do stickfigures as the artwork.
That would cut down on a lot of drawing time. But if you continue them or decide not continue them, Your past Diaries will always be cool in my book. :)

Have a Good Day, Rob

Aww... and I really look forward to your cartoon Con diaries. It's what I think of when I hear the name Kinky Turtle.

I would definitly miss reading your con diaries if you stopped doing them. But do what's best for you! Your health matters and if it ends up being more work than fun for you to do, then it's usually best to step away.

I don't think any of the old diaries will ever get finished, although depending on what trips I can find my notes for, I may finish them off in text.

And I've got a few remaining drawings that I haven't yet scanned. I can certainly put those up at some point.

I've always enjoyed your diaries over the years. I also can certainly see how you'd become tired of them, after doing them for so long!

Of course it's up to you what to do. Personally, I'd say, go to a con without any expectation of doing a diary, but if you see something happen and think "ooh, that would be perfect for a diary, I want to draw it!", just do a diary-style cartoon for that one situation / one event / one day / whatever. Perhaps make it into an occasional series.

In any case, don't force the diaries to happen. When you're having fun doing the diaries, you make even the most mundane or awful things funny! (eg. parking at the airport or going to the hospital, respectively)

I enjoy your diaries, KT. However, your health and good spirits come first. If your muse is taking you in another direction, I have enjoyed what you have shared with us via the diaries.

Okay, I don't understand that at all. To me, those are just perfectly legitimate (if a tad nerdy) boy's names. What do they mean in Australia?

In English slang (maybe Australian too) a "wally" is a stupid person.

I've always enjoyed the diaries, but what matters most is if -you- enjoy doing this.

It's been a great era, but if you no longer enjoy drawing them, it's time to cut back. Maybe one page per con.

I always look forward to your diaries, but if they're getting to be like work, putting them aside, either permanently or as a break, to work on other things isn't a bad idea.

Wow, and here I was all set to say what most have been saying here, and was afraid I'd get drowned out by the "no we'd miss the con diaries too much! Keep drawing them" crowd. I've always had the greatest respect for KT, now I also have it for his friends (well, those I don't know, those I do I have already had respect for) because y'all are sensible.

Although i will kind of miss the opportunity to be in a third diary when it arises. I've been in two so far, each under a different character name, and if you see me again, you now know me under a third name, as a furry character, and it would be neat to see him drawn just once in KT's diary (once I get his model drawn, of course! I have someone in mind for that.)

I remember when I started a paper diary, I pledged to write in it every day and, after about 15 months or so, I did start doing that, and I kept it up for over 10 years. Once my wife was pregnant with cub #2, things started getting way too busy for me, and keeping up a daily diary was more work than fun. I'd get behind weeks,t hen months, at a time, and I'd have to set aside time just to catch up (sound familiar?) Finally I decided to ditch it for pretty much the reasons you're saying. (I think my last diary still has some hastily scribbled pencil notes in a few days' spots to remind me what to write there, in lieu of a real entry). Then I got LJ and I can enter in entries at my own leisure (and I really like the "only I can see" feature!) and wasn't worried about having to catch up or anything.

I hope that at least you'll maybe report on your LJ what you did at a con/mania if you decide not to draw it (since LJing it is a lot less work)
