05:09 pm - Would-be purse snatcher!

Previous Entry Share Next Entry

Speaking of the mall, I witnessed an attempted crime there the other day! On Thursday I was walking through Macy's towards the mall corridor, when I spotted two people tussling out of the corner of my eye. At first I assumed it was good-natured boyfriend-girlfriend horseplay, but then I saw a man in a suit come running up and grab the guy from behind! Seems he was a would-be purse snatcher, and the man in the suit was a plainclothes security guard.

As I passed by, heading away from them into the mall corridor, I heard the guard tell the guy to get down on the floor. Suddenly the guy came running past me, shirtless! He must have struggled with the guard and wriggled out of his shirt. The security guard chased after him, close on his heels, followed by the woman.

I looked back and noticed they'd left some things lying around: the woman's purse, the guy's shirt, and the guard's handcuffs. I wondered if I ought to stand there and watch them to keep anyone else from stealing them, but then a uniformed security guard came out, and I walked away, satisfied the situation was under control.

The guy passed close by me enough that I probably could have tripped him or something! But I figured it was better not to get involved. As I continued on my way, I saw other shoppers and kiosk vendors looking down the corridor in the direction the three people had run, with looks of surprise and interest on their faces.

I dunno why I didn't mention this on Thursday when it happened. Probably because I talked about it on IRC and got the feeling of "gotta tell someone" out of my system. :}

All that and it was still a rated-G post, I'm disappointed!

Oh, so you don't think you should have gotten involved, eh? Just wait until the guy tries to snatch your Uncle Ben's purse and ends up killing him, then we'll see how involved you should have gotten! Then you'll be sorry! But seriously, say Hi to Uncle Ben for me. How's his pancreas?

Yeah, I thought of that, too. Or close enough. I pictured KT saying, "I miss the part where that's my problem," and later becoming... Turkleman?

You mean you've never had rice before? Next, you'll be telling us you've never had Aunt Jemimah.

Jeez, that's harsh. I mean, I know you both had your problems after that whole brouhaha at Lake Tanganyika and all, but jeeeeez. He's dead now -- it's all orphans over the waterfall at this point. Can't you just let bygones be bygones?

Obviously, I don't know all the details of what went on between you two. It's just that it really seems like he suffered so much as a result -- 15 years in that Kenyan prison, two years in that Kenyan prison lobby when he couldn't get a ride home, the chronic case of Ben Turtle's Disease he developed behind bars (also known as Prolapsed Nipple Syndrome), and of course his long struggle to overcome his independence from alcohol. Would it really be so hard to accept what I'm sure would have been a very moving deathbed apology, if you could have heard it over the sound of his pancreas exploding?

Yikes! A little excitement! My wife was a mall security guard around the time we were married*, she's had a few "interesting days" with scofflaws and the like. I don't think she carried anything like handcuffs on her job though, Canadian mall guards are nicer. :) (She also had a uniform)

(*I remember that it was when we were married because her supervisor had her down to work on our wedding day, and it took several weeks of negotiation for her to get that day off. It was getting really close too, I was jokingly suggesting for her to go to work that day in her wedding dress to show them that, yes, she needs the day off for a wedding. Hers.)

Apologies, btw, for not being on IRC Thursday and hearing the story then. I really miss the channel a lot, but am way too busy/tired for IRC lately. I think since I created my new fursona I have been on maybe four times? Yikes!) Give the channel my hellos though!
