Where con crud comes from? - The online computery journal thingy of a turtle

08:12 pm - Where con crud comes from?

Previous Entry Share Next Entry

I stayed at a motel once where the tap water tasted horrible. Ever since then, I've been bringing bottled water to hotels, even fancy convention hotels, as well as my own plastic cups to drink it out of.

This TV news article gives me another reason to keep doing that:

@@@@@h, smells like bullshit to me. Most of the hotels I've been in have individually wrapped plastic cups for use....and the weird thing is - that's exactly how I wash my coffee cups at work!

Yeah, blame a minimum-wage immigrant (some of whom are legal) for the illnesses you get from poorly-circulated airline air...

I've been to plenty of hotels that give you actual glasses. Not that I'm ever going to use one again. This is scary as hell!

My immune system must be fierce; I rarely get con crud and sick on trips. But it's still gross to think of where that glass may have been...

Depends on how nice the hotel is. At a nice hotel you'll get unwrapped glasses and be charged for Internet service and local phone calls. At a cheap hotel you get individually wrapped plastic cups and local phone calls are free. ;)

Really? You wash your coffee cup with window cleaner, right after you clean the toilet, wearing the same glove? And then dry it with a used washcloth?

I'm not blaming the immigrant workers. I've seen a lot of cleaning carts in hotels, and when I think about it, I don't think I've ever seen evidence of glassware, clean or dirty, on anything but the room service cups -- or any evidence that there's a PROVISION for glassware. This suggests that it's unspoken policy on a pretty high level.

Good question. There are so many hoaxes and urban legends surrounding hotels and product safety in general.

I've known about this trick for years. I always have a small bottle of dish soap in my luggage, so I don't get caught by that.

The most surprising things about this whole thing:
- that people believed that it would be any different
- that all the management insisted with straight faces that it was just an isolated incident

Ewwwww. No more hotel glasses for me, thanks for the tip KT. Guess I'll bring my own cup along from now on.
