I wouldn't mind seeing something similar with actual "Sesame Street" characters. The Cookie Mobster especially. Someone might give him an Oreo he couldn't refuse.

BTW, I'm rather glad that Avenue Q didn't get carried away with the adult themes and create a Nookie Monster.

For reals, do they explain how Trekkie and Kate have the same last name in the show? Kate is much more human looking (very close to Prairie Dawn) than Trekkie.

The explanation is that they're both named "Monster" because they're both Monsters [the word is capitalized in the Avenue Q book]. Kate's a Monster because she's furry. The show makes Monsters out to be just another race, like blacks. There's even hints of discrimination against them, like when Kate quits after her crabby old boss says, "I never should have hired a Monster!" Or the scene in the nightclub where Kate finds Lucy the Slut flirting with Princeton:

KATE: Oh, why hel-lo!

LUCY: I'll have a scotch on the rocks.

KATE: I'm not a waitress.

PRINCETON: Lucy, I'd like you to meet Kate Monster.

LUCY: Oh, you're dating a Monster. I dated a Monster once. But I got sick of picking the fur out of my teeth.

KATE: If your teeth are the problem, I could take out a couple.

PRINCETON: (breaking them up) Hey--it was nice talking to you, Lucy!

LUCY: Have fun with your Monster. But when you're ready for a real woman, you know where to find me.

It could be that the makers don't intend for the difference to signify just race. Bill Holbrook insists that species in K&K stands in for all kinds of ways in which humans divide themselves. Race just tends to come to mind for its basis in appearance.

Yeah, although for the most part, whether or not someone is a Monster makes as little difference on Avenue Q as it does on Sesame Street.

I've heard of sending your boyfriend to sleep on the couch when he's been naughty, but the aquarium? I just hope she doesn't have any sexy fish.
