03:51 am - Yakko's World

Previous Entry Share Next Entry

I've been wanting to do this ever since Rob Paulsen got this song stuck in my head all over again at Anthrocon: Yakko's World, in its entirety, in an LJ-usericon-compliant animated GIF. You can even synch it up with the song if you time it right!

Hmm, now that I think about it, I should totally put in a countdown at the end to make it easier to synch it up with a recording. I shall do that tomorrow!

EDIT: Now with countdown at the end, for easier synch-up!

Holy cats.

I'm speechless. Except for singing along.

That is some serious accomplishing there.

Wow, that's way cool. Including getting it into the 100k, 100x100 pixel limit. :)

It's better than that. According to the FAQ, GIFs supplied by the user must fit into 40k. Userpic Factory will satisfy these requirements for JPEG and PNG files.

Hooray for optimization! Before removing unchanged pixels, this animation was about 100K.

Would you believe that "Yakko's World" was the first part of the show I ever saw (after the opening sequence) and didn't appeal to me at the time? In my defense, I was 11 and wanted to see something else showing at the same time. Today, I recognize that while it's not the funniest thing from "Animaniacs," it's certainly one of the most impressive.

while I am a big fan of Yakko's World, I must say that Wakko's America is more impressive - and useful - for being complete. Two days ago I had a list of 47 state abbreviations, and couldn't figure out what had been left out -- so I sang my way through the song. It's saved me many times. (Same with the Presidents' Song.)

Being a geography geek, I want!

Now, being a geek, I am on the internet immediately to register my record of inaccuracies spotted:

* I wonder how "countries" are counted (in terms of not being one that is). We all know (and say it with me, PPPGALF members) "Tibet is not a country!" But are Scotland and England? After all, like Tibet, they are once former sovereign states who are now part of a larger country. And not too many consider any of the three mentioned "independent countries" any more. Perhaps purple is best for all three. (Also, were both Wales and N. Ireland represented in the "Left Out" category"?)

* An error I noticed right away in Yakko's World, but was also repeated in your icon - the territory of "Russia" is actually that of the Soviet Union - I can forgive other historical inaccuracies (like calling the Democratic Republic of Congo "Zaire" as that was the name it had then, it woudln't change its name for another 4 years), but "Russia" was smaller than what was put on the map by the time the song came out ...

* Palestine - a tricky one to decide if it's a white name or a red name, but it is in the song. (FWIW, my list of 229 nations does include Palestine, so I'd support you with "white".) But then, what is the territory of Palestine - you can't really see it on Yakko's map, your map seems like it's the same as Jordan.

* Yugoslavia - again, one that changed since the song (it fell apart in 1992, the year of or before the song, but there was still a territory called "Yugoslavia" until 2003. But why isn't there a Yugoslavia-shaped yellow piece in the "Left Out" category? (Or a Czechoslovakia-shaped piece)

(And yes, odd that someone would register yig-ped.com. The rest of the TLDs for yig-ped (including, presumably, yig-ped.tk (turtlekinky)) are free. homepagesplus.com can register it for you cheaply. ;) )

Some of your questions are answered on http://www3.telus.net/greenfish/animaniacs/newworld/ .

And I registered and parked yig-ped.com. Once I get over my laziness, Masem and I will work at setting it up properly.

I decided not to bother with what's changed since the song was written, just to keep things simple, so Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia etc. didn't count as "left out". And yeah, there's some fudging going on (such as letting "Russia" fill in for the entire Soviet Union), but hey, give Randy Rogel a break; he had to make everything fit in the song lyrics.

And to keep the filesize small, I changed the map view as infrequently as possible, which meant that many small countries ended up represented by just one or two pixels each. This means Palestine ended up occupying the same two pixels as Israel (would have if it had been mentioned during that map view). Sucks for them; lucky for me, as I didn't need to worry about precise borders.
