I'm reading the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly, and there's an article about Matt Damon in "The Bourne Ultimatum". It's the cover article, so it's introduced with a fancy two-page spread with a big photograph depicting Damon as Jason Bourne, right after he's knocked a bunch of armed attackers unconscious in a warehouse.

And there's a two-line caption at the bottom of this spread, but it's split across the two pages, and in my copy of the magazine, the two pages are imperfectly aligned, making it visually ambiguous which lines on the left are supposed to align with which lines on the right. If I read them the wrong way, the result is as follows:

                                                                                WITH THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM UNLIKELY
AS HE GETS READY TO SLAY THE COMPETITION A CRYING BABY AT HOME
ACTION STAR MATT DAMON TALKS ABOUT SURVIVING A KILLER SHOOT, A FICKLE TOWN, AND

Wow, his competition is a crying baby? I wonder if that's the same crying baby I was standing next to at Morphicon 2005!

Dang, I'm not even sure how it was supposed to read. In particular, where does "WITH THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM UNLIKELY" fit in?

Shift the first line and what's directly below it down one line.

Oh, I see, thanks. If I were the proofreader, I'd put a comma after "Ultimatum."

I don't care how loud the baby is crying, slaying it is just wrong, even if it is your competition. You need to try diplomacy first.

But ...

The British government has learned that the crying baby recently sought significant quantities of maternal attention from Africa. Our intelligence sources tell us that the crying baby has attempted to purchase high-strength rattles suitable for self-entertainment during naptime. Crying Baby has not credibly explained these activities. It clearly has much to hide.
