I'm posting anonymously to allow you to screen my response. I'm pretty sure I've got the answer - a pair of shoes - but I didn't want to immediately ruin it for anyone else.

Hmm, did he buy a cane, one which happened to be in an umbrella stand at the entrance? :)

No. I don't think canes really let you walk without a limp anyway, do they? They just make it easier to balance.

Nope, that wouldn't explain why he walks normally the moment he enters the store.

Is the man actually injured or is he faking the limp?

Well, he's not injured, but he is limping for a reason.

He's barefoot; it hurt to walk across the hard parking lot; and he bought shoes.

Your answer "shoes" is correct, but he wasn't barefoot.

Hint: ask me about the weather.

He walked up to the store wearing bad shoes, took them off when he entered, bought a new pair of shoes, and walked out in good shoes.

Close. He did buy new shoes, but he didn't take off the old ones right away. He was limping for a different reason.

It was a Wal-Mart, which hires scary old people as door greeters. The one at this store happened to be a master Lich. As for the guy... He bought the farm.

Shoes. It was hot outside, and he was missing one. It was cool in the store, so he did not have to favor the bare foot.

He bought a hamburger. He was hungry.

The limping thing is completely unrelated and meant as a red herring.

And you can't say that my answer can't make sense in the confines of the solution, whatever that may be ..

the Limp Fairy was following him around. The limp fairy's powers don't work indoors, so it left the poor guy alone and went off to bother someone else.
