I took my car to the Firestone place across the street. Long story short, there's something serious wrong with the engine, the thermostat, and some other parts. He explained it to me but it all went over my head. It'll cost about $1,400 and I won't get the car back until Saturday.

I shall try to forget about that for now and just enjoy the con. Last night I showed Babs my collection of Cars toys (I've got all four Delinquent Road Hazards now!), and she showed me her professional Muppet Baby puppet. (Being a professional Muppet Baby pays pretty well, but the cost of living's a b***h.)

Tell me what they say the problem is. A thermostat is not expensive nor difficult to replace. Sounds like someone wants to get you to help pay off his boat.

Yeah, get a second opinion from another shop, if you can. They may be taking advantage of you because you have out-of-state plates and they know they won't see you again. I'm not going to try to diagnose your car remotely, but $1400 is a lot of money for a cooling system problem.

I'd also add that, if the car hasn't been overheating, you can usually get quite a distance with a leaky cooling system as long as you keep it topped up.

for that price, it sounds like either 1) water pump or 2) head gaskets are blown. I do agree with the other comments.. Get a second opinion.

Not sure if it's valid for 1997, but I had a 1996 Cavalier, and GM sent me a recall notice detailing pretty much what KT's experiencing. The coolant leaks from the head gasket. GM extended the warranty for this repair to something like 7yr or 100000 miles, so it may not be covered anyway.

NO WAY does a water pump cost $1400.

You can do it yourself in an afternoon for $100 tops.
