There needs to be some sort of appropriate punishment for people who foist infuriatingly bad mechanical designs on the public.

Example 1: My camcorder. The screw hole to attach it to the tripod is so close to the tape door that the tripod head blocks the door; I have to completely remove the camera from the tripod to change tapes. This, as you can imagine, is an annoying problem when I go to cons and tape the Masquerade and it runs longer than a single tape lasts.

Example 2: I just helped my mom put together an ottoman she got by mail order. The bolts take an Allen wrench, but they are all located so close to inside corners that the wrench is blocked from spinning all the way around. For EVERY one of the eight bolts on there, I had to repeatedly insert the wrench, turn halfway, pull out, insert, turn, pull out, insert, turn, pull out... and actually, it's more like: fiddle with the damn thing trying to get it into the stupid hole why the hell won't it go in AH THERE, turn, pull out, fiddle with it some more COME ON DAMMIT OH THERE, turn, pull out, etc.

The people who design these things without considering the basic physical principle that two objects cannot occupy the same space at the same time must be PUNISHED! But not in standard generic ways like jail time or beatings, no. They should be forced to live with bad design themselves! They should have to drive cars that require a dozen different keys to open and start. Or their TVs should be designed so that the remote only works at a distance that's a little bit less than the distance from the couch.

Anybody got any other ideas?
