pop culture, girls

Guess what came in the mail today?

That's right!

...

Oh, um, and what it is is my copy of Attitude 3: The New Subversive Online Cartoonists, edited by Ted Rall and featuring some of my favorite cartoonists such as D.C. Simpson of Ozy & Millie and I Drew This; Thomas K. Dye of Newshounds; Nicholas Gurewitch of The Perry Bible Fellowship (don't worry, it's not religious; the title is as meaningless as "Tom the Dancing Bug"), and a buncha others!

Blaidd Drwg

So I've been watching Doctor Who on the Sci-Fi Channel. (They're still on the Christopher Eccleston episodes, so no spoilers about stuff I haven't seen yet, 'kay? The last episode I've seen was "Boom Town".)

So there's been this mysterious phrase that's been popping up in strange locations: "Bad Wolf". It's been overheard in casual conversations, seen in graffiti, on TV screens, printed in German on a WWII bomb, etc. The most recent occurrence, and the one that finally caused the Doctor to remark about it, was the name of the new nuclear power plant in Cardiff, Wales: "Blaidd Drwg", which is Welsh for "Bad Wolf".

The thing that strikes me as funny is that that phrase is pronounced "Blithe Droog", which sounds like some sort of strange mashup of Noël Coward and Anthony Burgess!
