Pricing out work. [09 May 2008|07:39am]

I'm attempting to price out sandal work that I've done. Two people are interested in purchasing sets, but I'm not sure what to charge.

I spent $35 in materials, and at least 8 hours of my time. Suggestions?

New Flash-based Font Construction Tool [09 May 2008|07:36am]

[cnoocy]
This seems very cool...
FontStruct is a tool that allows you to use a Flash-based editor to create fonts, which you can then download as TrueType fonts and use normally. I took a look at the gallery and people have done amazing things with it. The constructing tool is grid-based, but the resulting fonts have a surprising range. I was particularly impressed that it allows access to a lot of different Unicode blocks. (Though none of the really huge ones, and none of the private use areas. Yet.)
This seems like it's a potentially awesome tool for conscripters.

Changing directions again, because I need just a little more room before I talk about serious things again:

Holy wow, Faerie Macabre is a beating against Ichorid. There's a very good chance, I think, that it'll replace Leyline of the Void as graveyard meta in a number of decks, and an outside chance of replacing a couple of copies of Tormod's Crypt. It takes out critical pieces of Ichorid's threat structure (Ichorid, Bridge from Below) for zero mana - a very important cost in Vintage - and does so without advertising itself, at instant speed. If you're using Crypt or Leyline, usually they have to be on the board, which allows the Ichorid deck to play around them. The Faerie, on the other hand, can sit in your hand until the exact moment you need it, which gives you more flexibility and power. As well, Ichorid's answers to Crypt and Leyline are useless against Faerie - it just has Cabal Therapy, which people already know how to play around. As well, it's less likely to be a dead card: it can still get in for two, which neither Crypt nor Leyline can do. Two isn't much, but Vintage is all about taking every advantage you can get. I'm looking forward to seeing how people fit this into their Vintage builds.

Regarding Standard, though, I have no goddamn clue at all. Considering the track record of things, I'd bet on aggro to win PT Hollywood basically because in fresh formats, either aggro wins because no one's figured out the most efficient control strategies or someone breaks the format and wins with that.

Not Always Red In Tooth And Claw [09 May 2008|02:21am]

[info]bruceb pointed me to this absolutely amazing discussion of spontaneous play between carnivores of very different species, which is lovely and wonderful, and well worth viewing. In any case, I'm reminded of the discussions of cooperation instead of aggression that I linked to in this post. One of the inherent blinders we having in this culture is the idea that conflict and aggression are in some way more natural or expected than cooperation or play. I think that some part our bias in this direction comes from a combination of the inherent assumptions of conflict built into capitalism and the fact that modern Western culture as a whole was designed around the ideology of conquest.

However, in my lifetime, as I've discussed somewhat here and in the various links, I've seen belief of the primacy and unavoidability of violence and aggression become far more common that it was 30-40 years ago. I'm fairly certain that this change is largely due to a mixture of deliberate fear-mongering and non-deliberate marketing decisions made by a largely right-wing controlled mass media. In any case, regardless of the reasons, these biases often blind us to the fact that violence and aggression are only one of many equally natural responses. I very much look forward to our culture overcoming the negativity and associated cynicism of the last 30 years.

Honeydew [08 May 2008|10:14pm]

Late last night, I went down to Porlock and knocked on the man's door angrily. He came out to the door in a bathrobe and fuzzy rabbit slippers.

"What?" he said, rubbing his eyes.

"I want the rest of Kubla Khan," I said.

"No," he said, "I don't have it."

"You do too," I said, "You interrupted Coleridge on your dumb business and distracted him from his opium-filled visions and he forgot his poem. By the Law of Conservation of Beauty, the poem must have gone somewhere, and you're the most obvious suspect. So pony up, person from Porlock. I want the rest of Kubla Khan! Now!"

"First of all," he said, "that was over two hundred years ago, so I'm most certainly dead by now. Second, if I could give it away, don't you think I already would have done? Third, you don't even know where Porlock is. Last and most important, there is no Law of Conservation of Beauty. Beauty is limitless, and it is created and destroyed all the time."

I didn't go all the way to Porlock to get a reasonable deferral, or to have my irrational expectations go unmet!

I clenched my fists and stomped my feet and said, "I'm not leaving until you tell me the rest of the poem! Now now now now now now NOW!"

Okay, okay, he said, I'll tell you. )

Streptococcus pyogenes, oh how I hate thee! [08 May 2008|11:11pm]

[ mood | sick ]

A few weeks back I received a bunch of ant stings/bites on my foot. One of which festered and turned into a tiny little patch o' impetigo. The stupid little bugger must've gotten into something with strep on it, which ended up infecting me along with the sting. The standard treatment for that type of condition out here is to give erythromycin. I loaaaaaaathe erythromycin. The crud tears up my stomach bigtime. So I did a washing with chlorhexadine daily with gentian violet applications (kinda an older treatment over the counter). The little spots of it seemed to go away and all was well.

Needless to say after a little time of the strep apparently hiding in my system, it resurfaced this week. Now I'm running a little bit of a fever, my joints are aching, I have those horrible little spots in the back of my throat which make Jello feel like broken glass shards, etc. Oh, and instead of just impetigo coming back on my legs, I have what looks more like ecthyma (also yay for another diabetic indicator X3 ). For those that do not know, just pull out a cigarette or two and a cigar. Puff em up real warm. Now jab the flaming end into yourself. That looks and feels about the same as ecthyma. I have a few welts, one of which is a lovely 3" diameter as I type this, and is missing a chunk of tissue from my leg now about 1cm in diameter and deep. The others are not much nicer.

Gaaaah.... so now off to the doctor tomorrow as I found one that will take my new insurance. X3

From [info]gamera_spinning:

The first seven minutes of Speed Racer! :D

Remember my prediction that the Mach 5 would get trashed, making way for the "new, improved" Mach 6 in the big finish? Totally wrong. "Mach 6" is what Speed starts out in.

The Mach 5 itself does make an appearance in the opening here, but not in the context you might expect. Given how much footage of the Mach 5 is in the trailer, maybe the Mach 6 is the one that gets trashed? We'll see. Still, I love having my dire predictions thwarted! :D

PS: Assuming the beginning race isn't a flash-forward, of course. ;P

Return of the Furry Fifteen Minutes. [08 May 2008|08:10pm]

2_gryphon
To all you 2 Sense listeners out there...

We want to bring back the Furry Fifteen minutes on the show. For those who don't remember the old days of 2 Sense, we used to go onto the MUCKs and the forums and pick out a random furry and interview him or her. We ask them about themselves, who they were, what they liked best about the furry fandom... things like that. It was a way for the show to give other furries a place in the spotlight for a few minutes and to introduce the fandom to some of its members.

But this time, we want to do it a little differently. We've recently rigged a way to be able to record phone calls, and instead of doing a text interview, we'd like to interview furries over the phone for their 15 minutes on the show (which will actually probably be less than 15 minutes. It's an Andy Warhol thing.)

The thing is, we need phone numbers! We can't just look in the furry section of the phone book (maybe one day though).

If you would like to be a candidate for being interviewed by Jibba and myself for the Furry Fifteen Minutes, e-mail 2@ranting-gryphon.com with these things...

1). Your phone number.
2). Your furry name.
3.) Your REAL name, in case someone else answers and we have to ask for you.
4.) The best time to give you a call.

We will e-mail you when you're chosen to be interviewed to let you know ahead of time that we'll be calling.

We hope that this will be a segment that will be fun for the show, so send us those numbers!

***UPDATE***

Something I forgot to mention... This segment is only extended to folks in the US or Canada. It's not that we're forgetting about our listeners overseas. We would love to be able to interview them as well. However, we can only make flat rate calls to people on this particular continent. Anything else would cost loads of money.

We'll work on a way to record international calls through Skype, and if we can, then we'll see if we can do some interviews with our listeners in Europe and beyond.

A Guide to Fursuiter Etiquette for Non-Suiters [08 May 2008|06:44pm]

[santa_fox]
[ mood | cheerful ]

With all the talk lately about what things that fursuiters are and are not okay with being done with them while they are in costume, I thought it would be a good time to mention the guide that I created a while back, called "Fursuiter Etiquette for Non-Suiters". A copy of this guide is posted on the Furry Weekend Atlanta website:

http://www.furryweekend.com/fs_etiquette

I think this guide sums up the common concerns and feelings that fursuiters have about the way most would prefer that other furs treat them when they are at cons and other furry gatherings in fursuit. I just updated the guide with a few interesting points that came out of recent discussions in this community that I had not thought about before.

If you run a con or other furry event, you are more than welcome to copy the guide and make it available to your attendees as long as you credit me as the creator of the guide.

Thank you everyone! [08 May 2008|05:41pm]

Thank you everyone who gave me shout outs and sent gifts. You are all incredible!

Yesterday was spent at work, finding out my parents may split if the house eventually sells (long story, but I'm hardly surprised), visiting Grace and the kitties, Carlisle stopping by and us geeking about computer stuff, Chris surprising me with Chinese food and a DVD of Surf's Up, and a number of phone calls and messages.

I tend to be bad about remembering b'days, so I feel weird when I don't keep enough with them.

Hobbes, I'll try to get a photo of Edmund holding the bust on Saturday.

Carlisle and I talked about parts for the new box. Do these sound okay?

[Gaming] What I’d do with games I’ve worked on [08 May 2008|02:29pm]

[ mood | geeky ]

I’ve written a whole lot of gaming supplements, and major portions a number of RPGs, and yet I’m essentially never tempted to play anything out of the box. I’m by nature a tinkerer and when I look at a game, my first thought is how to change it (in both setting and rules) to better fit what I would want to do with it. So, here are a number of the games that I’ve worked on and what I’d like to do with them. Campaign ideas found here )

Impressive steampunk article [08 May 2008|02:11pm]

heron61
[ mood | pleased ]

Steampunk isn't my personal style (although it's somewhat close, and I'd certainly carry a brass-covered iphone), but I definitely appreciate it, and know several people who it works perfectly on. For them and everyone else, here's a truly impressive NYT article on steampunk style, which seems to actually "get" the idea, is in no way dismissive, and (most impressive) features images of people of all shapes, sizes, and races and with many images of both men and women. Very nice indeed.

I was especially struck by two quotes (the first by someone interviewed, the second in the text in the lovely photo gallery) that work well for me:

"This is more refined. It goes back to a time when people had some dignity.

and
"the style is also an expression of a desire to return to ritual and formality..."
