I started to watch it. It started out so neat, with a quest!! But the quest ended in the second episode, so now there's no story arc anymore.

That's the case with almost all cartoons these days: no multi-episode story arcs because the distributors want to be able to shuffle the episodes in any order.

I'd love to see a few more two-parters with cliffhangers, but at least some of the single episode stories have been rather good.

It's the case with almost all shows, and almost always has been. People expect to be able to jump in at any point and reasonably get what's going on. Really, I can see this starting to happen less as time goes on, and DVD sets and watch-for-free-online reruns becoming the norm.

Most of my favorite TV shows in recent memory (Doctor Who, Battlestar Galactica, 24) need to be watched in correct order to get the full impact of the story. Good stories are like good books, the chapters have to fit together in just one way. If the episodes can be shuffled without losing anything, then there's no over-arcing story holding the pieces together, so the show is considerably less than it could be.

Earlier this week, I heard another use of the SMB2 theme. (Warning: The video was loud for me.)

I wish I could explain why I find this show so enjoyable. "It's cute" does not come close to cutting it. If someone were to explain that certain episodes contained a subliminal signal that fires off the neural receptors responsible for bliss in the brain, I would not disregard it off hand.

Considering how obsessed it's driven the people who do like it to become, I wouldn't disregard it either.

I saw! Plus a couple of possibly-gratuitous-seeming derpy-eyes moments from Fluttershy and Twilight right at the beginning. I wonder if the animators were teasing the fans?

I wonder if the season finale will be a Derpy appreciation episode. So far her only spoken word was "Muffin!"

There's a theory on /co/ that the finale will take place at the Grand Galloping Gala (which still appears to be set to happen in the future) and that's where Luna will make her promised reappearance.

I'm not sure I want to see what they'd come up with for Derpy.

This is so much funnier than the original that I feel bad making people watch the original first.

My theory is that the original series was created by men who thought little girls were rather stupid and needed soft, sappy stories. The new series is almost entirely created by women, and they know how complicated little girls are because they were little girls themselves once.

Yup. I refer to the original MLP as a "cat food" show.

If your job is to make new flavors of cat food, you're at a disadvantage in that cats can't talk; they can't suggest new flavors, they can't tell you if your latest recipe is missing something or has a slight aftertaste it could do without; they can't give any feedback beyond whether they prefer formula A over formula B. Thus, cat food can only be made with indirect knowledge of what cats like.

Many (perhaps most) shows for young children, especially girls, are made in a similar fashion.
