TVTropes Will Ruin Your Life... in more than one way - The online computery journal thingy of a turtle

02:56 pm - TVTropes Will Ruin Your Life... in more than one way

Previous Entry Share Next Entry

Oh maaan, I was up waaay too late last night. I'm planning to spend the next week readjusting my bedtime schedule, in decrements of a half hour per day, so I can get up nice and early the following Monday for the drive to Chicago for MFF.

During the bedtime-adjustment period, I need to set myself a hard-and-fast rule: NO READING TVTROPES. AT ALL.

That's a horrible, horrible site because every interesting page has a dozen links to other interesting pages. FurAffinity is almost as bad, you find one cute picture and you have to see everything the artist has made plus everything the artist has favorited.

And Cracked.com, at least as far as lists go.

Incidentally, I was on TV Tropes earlier today. Blew an hour or so, but no time I really wish I'd spent on anything else. I'm getting better at stopping.

i'm only on at work - during my lunch hour and sometimes during really boring conference calls I'm obliged to attend. i felt the need to add the Animaniacs shout out in Jurassic Park 2.

it is dangerous, yes. so is cracked, but at least that tends to be blocked at work.

The end of the world.

(Personally, my huge time sink is Discogs.com... a record geek's dream)

I have seen the occasional link from a trope page to a Cracked list.

OK, I see Please Please Pleese Get a Life Foundation listed under the Animaniacs "Take That"... but no mention of how the studio showed it to the Animania IV folks or that it was taken directly from a.t.a.?

* fights urge to edit.

Let's face it, that knowledge (especially the showing at A! IV) is not widely known (though treasured by those that do...)

i wasn't... i got to watch the PPPGALF premiere at Animania V, tho'

but my point is that, while not widely known, it was covered on Entertainment Tonight, and, well, it seemed like someone from the fandom might have mentioned it. if nothing else, it's a Crowning Moment of Being Able to Laugh At Ourselves.

i'm not sure that's a trope.

This happened to me the very first time I went on TV Tropes. I stayed up later than I think I ever had since college. So I was immediately aware of its terrible power. I really ought to force myself not to use that site after 10 PM or so, but it might be like invading Russia: no matter how early you try to get a head start on it, you're still going to be stuck there till the middle of winter.

AUGH YES

The last time I went there I spent probably at least an hour and a half... and that was after having resolved to NOT FOLLOW ANY LINKS and then breaking that resolution halfway through the page. T_T

I know! That's why I'm going to have to stay totally 100% away. I tell myself I'm just going to read one page, but then I see an intriguing link title such as Ooh Me Accent's Slipping, Fake Shemp, or Serkis Folk, and the next thing I know it's breakfast time!
