05:58 pm - I think I know what bugs me most about the new "Clash of the Titans"...

Previous Entry Share Next Entry

The original Clash of the Titans was made for people who like fantasy. The new version seems to have been made for people who like war films. (You can probably guess which group I'm in.) It looks like a war film. As I mentioned in my previous post, Sam Worthington's still got his jarhead buzzcut from Avatar. And then there's all the rough, tough fighting in far-flung, filthy, grimy places (including deserts! Apparently Perseus and his men had to travel from Greece through the Middle East to get to the Underworld? What, it's in Pakistan?)

Also, I'm hearing from people who've seen CotT in 3-D that you shouldn't waste your money; if you're going to see it, see it in 2-D instead. Fortunately, I did. And I can understand why: I read that the director filmed it in 2-D, not knowing until he was done that the studio wanted it in 3-D. So they had to digitally rejigger the finished film to make it 3-D.

Would this be a bad time to mention that Joppa is actually in the middle east?

But after crossing the desert, they enter the Underworld by paying Chiron to take them across a river that I'm guessing is either Acheron or Styx, both of which are supposed to be in Greece, aren't they? Or am I getting something wrong?

If it's following the plot of the original, then they'd be traveling from Joppa to Greece, or possible Turkey according to wiki, so presumably at some point they'd pass through a desert. It's Hollywood, you expect any of it to make sense? ;) As an official Language Person, you should be more annoyed they're still calling the beasty a Kraken.

I'm not a classics student (despite my awesome TESTVDO icon). I only know what Wikipedia tells me...

Same here. I meant the 1980's original. (A.D.) I only know where Joppa is because it came up in a discussion once.
I thought it was pretty well known that the Kraken is a Scandinavian name though, not Greek. It's irritated me ever since I saw the first one and now they've done it again.

haven't seen it, no inclination, but loved Stephen Colbert's line that the characters remained "1-D"

I think most modern remakes appear to take themselves more seriously than the originals, Peter Jackson's King Kong notwithstanding. Or maybe they're just grittier.

It makes sense from a realism standpoint that they'd get dirty and bloody like that, what with all that fighting and attacking and whatnot. Still, the movie does seem to revel in its dirtiness.

If I ever made some swordfighting epic, I'd set it near a river so the characters could *bathe* now and then! :}

Good thinking. 'Course, 300 wouldn't be the same if the notorious well were filled to the brim.

My favorite part was when Bubo transformed from an owl into a power suit for Perseus, and he battled Starscream to the death!

Gotta love the classics.

As long as it's more like Gladiator than Saving Private Ryan, I'll watch it.
