Previous Entry Share Next Entry

I just saw Clash of the Titans and I feel like I need a shower! Much grittier and grimier than the original. Everything except the gods' temple on Mount Olympus is all broken and twisted and ugly and old. The special effects are of course much more impressive than the original, but the action scenes have a little too much what-the-hell-is-going-on back-and-forth quick cutting. And why does Perseus (Sam Worthington) still have his Avatar buzzcut? He's a mariner, not a Marine! He's the only one in the whole movie who isn't all hairy. Also there's no Bubo. Well, there is, once, briefly. The actors certainly do a fine job.

But still... grime and grit, ew ick.

I'm not the only one who thinks the trailer makes it look no fun. Some reviews say it really is no fun. It opened with an IMDb rating in the 8's, but unlike How to Train Your Dragon, it didn't stay up: 6.7 at the moment.

My thoughts exactly! Bubo does appear in a brief, in-jokey cameo, though: Perseus is in an armory, picking weapons out of a trunk, and he finds something and picks it up; it's Bubo, still functioning. He says, "What's this?" and the other guy says, "It's nothing. Leave it."

The interesting thing about that is, actor Sam Worthington didn't want Bubo in the movie at all, not even for that little scene, and I have to admit that he's got a point. Bubo totally doesn't fit the feel of this movie at all, and even that little scene is jarring; this version has no place for Bubo.

But really, I prefer a "Clash of the Titans" in which there can be a Bubo.
