04:08 pm - Armenia: Land of Weird Names

Previous Entry Share Next Entry

I know St. Mesrop Mashtots is an important figure in Armenian history, but whenever I see the name, all I can think of is some 3-year-old kid asking his mommy to mash up his tater tots for him.

And while I'm being culturally insensitive, is it just me or do a lot of Armenian surnames sound like alien races from Star Trek?

"Captain, there's a Vartanian battlecruiser decloaking off the port bow!"
"Open hailing frequency."
"Greetings, Captain Picard! I demand you turn over the Malakian ambassador to me immediately, or I shall obliterate the Odadjian homeworld!"
"This is in direct violation of the Dolmayan Treaty!"
"Treaties are meaningless to me. Shall I call in my allies, the entire Tankian army?"
"Tankian?! Okay, now you're just making up names. What's next, the Jeepians? Or the Aircraftcarrierians?"

Holy crap, it's the Mental Organism Designed Only for Conifers!

Wait, that doesn't make sense. Um... would you believe Massive Orchard Designed Only for Conifers?

Yup, that's what I figure.

Also I guess the Vartanian Empire really hates "Chop Suey".

Actually, I read the first name, and I couldn't help but think "Slashdots". Does this make me a geek?

Never thought about the Star Trek thing, but I have found Armenian names odd, especially the -ian part (sounding more like a demonym than a surname). I'll think of the Star Trek connection from now on, Kardashian has always made it easy (similarity to Cardasssian and all).

I wonder if "Cardassian" is an in-joke. :}
