I was somewhat distressed that PETA objected to the killing of the fly. Don't they know that flies aren't animals?

Flies are animals, but they're r-strategists (in summary: they produce large numbers of offspring which they don't nurture, and most of which typically don't survive to adulthood). It's a bit like blasting one of those spindly little guard droids from "Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace".
