Shopping spree - The online computery journal thingy of a turtle

06:36 pm - Shopping spree

Previous Entry Share Next Entry

Today, after the glass repair guy showed up and replaced my car window, I went on a shopping spree to replace all the tools and knickknacks I lost when my bag was stolen. I got a new winter hat, Swiss Army knife, pillcase, reading glasses and case for them, folder for holding papers, lip balm, calculator, and shoulder strap for this bag I'm using which used to be my bag until its shoulder strap broke.

I also bought a new digital camera... and apparently I signed up for a $24 lesson: "Differences Between Memory Card Formats 101". I bought a 4GB SD card, not realizing that the camera (Sony Cybershot DSC-H10) takes Memory Stick Duo cards, which are completely incompatible with SD cards, being a different size.

Anybody want a brand new 4GB SD card? No, screw that, I'll use this as an excuse to buy a second camera, and look for one that takes SD. :P Maybe. I dunno.

I'd love to get a new 4GB SD card, except my camera was stolen out of my checked baggage.

I really hate checking anything electronic for that reason. If I can't stick it in my carry-on, I'd rather ship it ahead.

I chose the Sony Cybershot mainly because it was about the same size as my old camera but has an optical zoom factor of 10. I was a little tired of my old camera's puny 4x zoom.

I have an A620, but its main failure is the 2GB SD card limit. Now I have an SD1100IS, which is about as good as the A620 but has a chance of fitting in my pocket. And it supports SDHC.

I figure that when I actually need a good camera, it'll be an SLR. Probably a Nikon, since I can get one with a starter lens for roughly $500 new.

Panasonic's new sort-of-SLR looks really interesting. I'm curious how it'll work out in practice. I say "sort-of" because it doesn't use a traditional mirror box and prism -- it uses a digital viewfinder, fed by the image sensor, kind of taking a page from camcorders. It's an interesting concept with some distinct advantages over normal SLRs.

's why I never buy Sony - there's never been a standard they didn't fight tooth and nail before succumbing to it. I only wonder why Memory Sticks haven't faded away yet.

Dammit, where were you about six months ago? I recently got an iPod touch a few weeks ago and it's my pride and joy. Before that I had (still have, and works, gotta find something to do with it now) a Sony CLIE as my PDA, it also plays music, but I only have a 512MB card for it, so it only holds about 5 albums (or about a third of my national anthems collection) at a time. My 8GB iPod has shown me I can fit *all* my music quite nicely in a 4GB area.

Ah well, the iPod is way cooler anyways, but at least with a 4GB thing I woudln't have to think what albums to put on there before I left the house and not regret the choice.

I haven't seen any reason that ANY format other than SD and the mini/micro variants still exist. Every camera worth a shit uses them, every media player uses them, the only thing I see that ever supports screwy formats is Sony (PSP, cameras) it's getting really absurd.

Also, yeah, Sony did invent the MS series of cards, and they're the only company to use them, imagine that...

It's like Sony is the Microsoft of consumer electronics!
