12:13 am - The Game

Previous Entry Share Next Entry

At MFF during Whose Lion Is It Anyway, and later during the FVS, there were jokes involving telling a roomful of people "YOU JUST LOST THE GAME".

Fortunately, I'm not playing the Game! :}

Y'know, the basic idea (Rule 2: the object of the Game is to forget about the Game) is actually an interesting mental exercise. It's interesting to wonder if there are any strategies to it, or to contemplate the likelihood of losing the game by seeing some reference to it somewhere such as in this post here.

The really stupid part, the part that threatens to just ruin the whole enterprise, is that dumb Rule 1 ("You are playing the Game" [whether you like it or not, apparently]). The basic idea is interesting enough to be properly memetic on its own. IMO, Rule 1 is a clumsy attempt to make it artificially memetic, in a way that wasn't needed in the first place! It's like taping metal hooks to a balloon so that after you rub it on your hair, you can stick it onto the wall.

My reaction to people who *insist* that I am playing the Game is "The hell I am." Its rules don't have any authority over me.

Everyone is playing the game.

There is no opt-out until we win the game. :)

I think it's like Global Thermonuclear War. The only way to win is not to play. :)

I can't read this post without immediately thinking of the song from "Damn Yankees."

It's called "The Game," though it's about the resolve of the Joe Hardy-less Washington Senators to maintain training discipline in the light of all sorts of temptations.

I'm planning to play that in real life in late January (on my way to San Jose for Further Confusion)!
