04:02 pm - A place to stay

Previous Entry Share Next Entry

Still no power at my house, but Glenn, who is a friend and former coworker of my mom, has invited me to stay with him and his wife until it's back up. Actually he invited both of us, but Mom decided she'd better stay behind so she could watch the house, take care of the cat, etc.

So I finally get to sleep with air conditioning, yay!

And you get to sleep with a computer! Yay!

(Wait, that didn't come out right. (And it's giving me a picture of a NSFW cartoon starring KT that I *really* wish I didn't picture!))

How come your family didn't just invest in a generator? Or are those not as great as they're supposed to be?

Can't really run a central A/C system on a generator, which makes it not really worth the noise (our neighbors have a generator and it's like having someone run a motorcycle next door all day) or the danger (those things put out carbon monoxide and have to be kept outside).

That plus the fact that we didn't expect to be without power for TWO WEEKS (or however long it's going to be)!

I didn't have AC growing up, but I don't know if I could stand to be without it during summer as an adult. We managed to get by with electric fans when it got to 90 degrees or so, but I imagine you can't even get fans going with the power outage.

We're the reverse. I grew up with AC (at least when we moved to Winnipeg, can't recall if we had it up north) - I remember my grandmother didn't and I always noticed it in the summer and thought her place was too hot. (And, before you wonder, yes our winters are really cold, but our summers are really hot too. Temps around 100F aren't unusual in the summer.) When I moved out, my apartment had a window unit, as well as the first apartment we got after we married. But then, four years ago, we moved into this house, which doesn't have AC. Yes, it's noticable, especially when it's really hot out and/or I'm cooking in the kitchen (no fan over the stove either), thank goodness we have a few fans that make it tolerable - but the upshot is that the basement, being the basement, is much cooler when it's hot out, and, since the computer is here, it's a good excuse to geek it up down here. If something like what befell KT befalls us, I know where we'd go (we wouldn't be able to use the computer or TV down here, but at least it's quite livable down here when it's hot.)
